Hi all, long time no type. I've been sucessfully mapping my latest effort in CODRAD and have had very few problems except now. All of a sudden and seemingly for no reason, the lighting aspect of the compiler is crashing every time at a random stage. Although I don't think this has anything to do with it I am using scorpio's codpiler. I've tried debugging my map (by deleting recently added brushes and patches, even as far back as 1-2 weeks) but the error still occurs. In fact, I don't think it has anything to do with my map - it just seems like flare has suddenly stopped working. I say that because I deleted a huge chunk of my map (effectively going back to when the compiler had no problems) and still it crashes. I have no idea what is causing this error and will continue to try to debug my map to see if it is related to that, but I just wondered if anyone else knew what might be causing this. Specs are Winxp Pro, Athlon XP 2000, 512 DDR although I doubt it's a system error as it was working fine for weeks. I'll check back here next week, if I can (not on the net at home for a while). Thanks in advance for any help I may get. Just remember that it's only the final lighting section that is causing flare to crash. Cya about.
Ok, just got back to work after xmas weekend, no internet so haven't been able to reply until now. The compile text isn't relevant as it's not an error in the compile that is causing the crash (in fact the text is exactly the same every time, crash or not). I think I've actually worked it out anyway, although I have no way to fix it as yet. I've decided it's not an error in my map at all. That's the good news. After deleting various chunks of the map and compiling dozens of times I've concluded that the compiler crashes during flare's hemicube calculations at a totally random time. The reason I have yet to notice it until now is this crash is more likely to occur the longer these calculations go on - Hence, as my map has grown it has started taking longer to compile the light. Just to back that theory up I ran flare with only 6 hemicube edges (108 samples) and the compile worked with no glitches. I then ran exactly the same compile again and it crashed. I tried this ad infinitum and it crashed at various stages and it sometimes worked. Totally random. Although that's kind of good news it's bad news as well because it means I cannot fix the problem simply by fixing the map. It narrows the problem down to my system or flare itself. I would have to deduct that flare is not faulty (otherwise more people would have reported this crash) so it seems it would have to be my system, most likely my windows installation. I've been having a lot of system problems since I installed WinXP (most games and programs crash frequently) and I have a few ideas as to why, so as soon as I'm back on the internet I'm going to reinstall and sort it out. That should hopefully help. In the meantime I will render my map with low flare settings (this seems to be working as it only takes a few seconds to render the light - Poor quality visually but enough for me to see how the map will look) and when it comes to full compiles I can get a friend to do it for me. I might even pop back here when I've given it to my friend to see if it works on his system - At least that will prove my theory and put this particular issue to rest The map's going good and the basic geometry is 1/4 complete. I'll post some news here when it nears completion. Balr, you may be mildly interested in this effort as it will be 90% terrain (as opposed to my two MOH:AA maps which were 90% structural). Have a happy New Year.
Use the COD Compiler, I was using the .bat file to compile and kept crashing/freezing when I got to a certain point in my map. So I downloaded the COD Compiler and all is well.
Which Compiler are you refering to? I'm using scorpion midget's front-end compiler and that uses the bsp and flare compiling programs that come with the editor. So far as I know that would have zero effect on crashing as it just initiates bsp and flare.
I've discovered flare has been crashing due to my CPU over-heating. This is caused by my fan/cooler being faulty and is now fixed (as per my recent thread in the general forums about COD crashing) No further issues with the compilation process, so all good now.
