Half Life 2 lets start planning our mods

    Well, let me tell you my thougts:
    1.Half life 2 has such a great engine, that people will play it more than 3 years, so we have enough time
    2.Half Life 2 has got a huge comunity, perhaps there will be much modders for the mod
    3. Italy for example could be just a nation in MP - with their own weapons and skins, nothing more - so it's not much work
    4. When you create a huge mod, you need lots of time, so I got an idea - first make two nations, then add the others with patches...

    Perhaps, it could be just a MP-Mod...
    Then, its really not very much work.

    It'll still be a Soviet Versus Allied affair, but I'm gonna make it a little more diverse, and make a balanced between more Military Hardware and some weapons and vehicles I'm cooking up myself, to give it a sci-fi edge. Plus more involved team-work based combat.

    we could have a sequel/parallel to HITP called "Hell in the Med" that features North Africa, as well as Turkey, Greece (the Balkans), Italy and Southern France & Spain.

    it would be cool if the DOD team (or u guys) make something like DOD but in the other theaters of WW2. like in russia, italy, pacific, etc etc. maybe the DOD team will expand on there game because if they did that would be a reallly sweet game.

    There is also a HL2 mod called The Last Great was it will include The pacific,NorthAfrica,Europe,Sovjet campaigne and much more i think.:p

    Yah, im thinking of starting a modification for hl2, called Gunners of War.
    i meen, im doing a animated movie on the mod and it's 56% done. so why not make the rest. i think it's a good idea, for my liking. hear are my details about the mod.

    Pvt.Hensley = Soldier of light. youl find out what it meens in at TownAssault
    Pvt.Caparzo = willing to risk his life for others :See Lost Squad:

    anyway that is the Squad that will be taking place in this story.

    Cpt.Lightner, is a Squad leader Who gets Cought up with 5 Squad members
    on normady invasion. he's been imformed, by the General of Army.
    that he and his Squad, Must steal documents thrue, a german insertion Camp. but when things go wrong and bad. things start to heat up. as you travel thru 9 differant maps. you will feel, realistic combat, enviroment,
    and the story about 6 men, called the |Gunners - of - War |

    How in the heck could you not know about Half-Life ive never played it ever and ive known about it since the day it came out its like one of the most massly produced games in the world youd have to live in a hole to not know about it.

    ignore the troll, Joe... until a few months ago i had never heard of half-life either. i was completely immersed in the game Thief 2 for a whole year and that was the first FPS game i played since Doom.

    As Far As I understand, Half Life was this first-person shooter game that came out around 1998 (maybe earlier). Apparently it was the first fps with real good AI and immersive environments, and so it became quite popular. Maybe someone else could explain this better than i could...

    AI was nothing to write home about, but it was the first FPS with a real storyline and an immersive single player game, up to a point. The first half of the game was quite good, but it disintegrated into nothing but trying to make endless, near impossible jumps. The real strength of the game was realistic settings, weapons (sort of) and player movement. Up until then, all FPS games were Quake style bunny-hoppers with absurd weapons and power-ups.

    Heretic 2 was a game that came out about a week or two before HL, and it beat HL in every area you could image (better engine, better graphics, better story, far better network code, etc, etc.). Unfortunately it was a fantasy based 3rd person shooter that simply never caught on with gamers. It also did poorly with the mod community because it was made by Raven, who never releases their model formats.

    HL was based on a highly modified Q1 engine at a time when most other games were Q2 based and Q3 was just coming out. It really benefitted from incredible timing. The other games were either a style that people didn't care for, or had resource requirements lots of gamers couldn't handle. It was the last game that low-end PCs and 56k modem players could enjoy. It still is.

    Based on Valve's history with engines, I would expect HL2 is based on a highly modified Q3 engine. It will not have the engine power of many of the latest engines, but will be feature rich in other areas and be highly mod-dable and well supported.

    HL2 engine is brand new and coded from scratch, the Quake 3 engine wouldn't have the capacity possible for the majority of new features HL2 offers.

    Additionally the engine has ten times the "engine power" of any other currently known engine not including Doom 3 (but still more powerful). The HL2 engine allows vast environments and dynamic geometry among other features that will guarantee its modding success and visual splendor for years to come.

    That was the same line Valve originally used before releasing HL. It took them 2 years to admit HL was based on Q1. I'm not saying it will be crap or won't be a huge success with the mod community, but there were many weaknesses and problems with the HL engine Valve never fixed. I have a hard time believing they came up with the resources to develop a fantastic new engine when there were so many flaws in the previous one. That would be a real industry first. Every really good 3D engine has come from a developer with prior success at creating good engines.

    Another point: the Q3 engine is much more capable than you realize. The inhibiting factors have always been the ancient compilers. If you remove the need for them, you open up a lot of flexibility in any engine.

    True, but with HL they did a lot more with the licensed engine than anyone could have imagined at the time, and I don't assume that Source will be the be-all-and-end-all of FPS engines, but I'm looking forward to something impressive.

    Besides, just wait until Carmack gets done with the Q4 engine. The guy is a god.

    As a long time modder of Raven games, I'm a member of their developers forum. Just like Q3 blew away every current engine, D3 (Q4) will do the same. Carmack is brilliant when it comes to designing 3D engines, but he's also something of a wild-card. You know the engine will be great, but you never know what direction he's going to go in with respect to other game elements. Expect some very unusual network support. Peer-to-peer. No servers (at least as we know them).
