I've heard much about the UO lag problems but I haven't experienced any until recently.

Whenever I play, the first few maps run w/o a hitch. There's lag, but it's nominal. The game runs just fine. Yet, after a few maps my game goes apeshit. The video/sound gets jumpy, ping goes insane and I lose a bunch of packets. I cannot play when this happens (and I'm not exaggerating).

Here, check this out: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v291/cow_tamer/Other/shot0002.jpg. That's on a server where I was running at 70 ping just moments before. I played there for about an hour and the lagometer was just blue and green. Everything was fine.

Does anybody know what causes this? Can anybody help me fix it?

There's no reason I should be experiencing this much lag. I exceed all the minimum requirements and am connected via cable. Furthermore, I've tried out every solution Activision or GMI suggests--chaging the rate, adjusting options, etc, etc, etc. This also happens on every server, every map, every mode, no matter how high or low my settings are, no matter how crowded.

Here're my system specs in case you need them:

    AMD Athlon XP 1800+
    256 Ram
    GeForce 3 Ti200 w/ 128 DDram
    Cable modem
    All latest drivers (double-checked today)

    I appreciate any help.

    Thanks!

    /cg_lagometer 1

this worked for the first one i dunno if it will work....

anyways the top part of the meter is server lad and the bottom is your lag

Thanks Phantom, but I already used the lagometer. Check out the pic.

It appears to be a combination of server lag and my system lagging, however, directly before this happens everything was perfect.

Played united offensive tdm's during last week, only time I experienced any lag was when my own connection was on the verge of crashing...otherwise its been fine.

    Well that's irrelevant...

Anyway, I forgot to mention: in order to get around my problem, I have to fully exit the game and then start it again. Exiting a server and then signing onto a new one won't help.

    Now we're getting somewhere

Balr, I was thinking a memory problem too, but would that affect server lag? Did you see my lagometer pic? I'm no computer genius, heck I make computer retards look good, but according to the lagometer, it looks like the pc's aren't communicating well enough. I'm not refuting you; I'm just questioning out of ignorance.

Anyhow, if it is a memory leak, would I be able to fix that or is it a game issue? I have enough memory to run the game. I'm just puzzled here, and very disappointed.:(

Network communications are often the first noticable thing to suffer when adequate resources are no longer available. A game engine needs a memory manager to keep track of everything it's using, even when it's using Windows virtual storage. They use an awful lot of memory for a lot of concurrent tasks. The decision of when to acquire and release memory blocks, and when to expand and contract memory pools is loaded with timing and logistic issues. It's never a "sure thing", because you are doing it "on the fly". Sooner or later you are going to get contamination or slow-downs. There is nothing you can do about it and a fix is unlikely.

    Hi Cow
Well.. one thing you could look at is your ram. You only have 256 Mb. As far as i know winXP uses 123 MB just to run. Also your video card might need an upgrade.

    My specs are:
    P4 2.8 Ghz 800 FSB
    512 Mb Kingston ram
    Geforce4 Ti4200

I have yet to experince any lag in UO. I have been playing on a 42 player server for hours without any problems at all.

According to a gray matter employee on the IW forum if you are useing a cable or dsl connection you should type /rate into the console and if it is not set at 25000 as mine was not I got a rate of 5000 when I did it he said you should type in /rate 25000 and also for a server to use sv_maxrate 25000 also .

Well gentlemen, this is deflating news.

Bdbodger, already tried that. It had no affect.

Balr, thanks for the insight. It's not exactly what I wanted to hear, but at least I'm now enlightened.

Joe, looks like I'm off to the store. At least ram's cheap. So are the G4s, though. Oh well, I hope an upgrade works considering I'm already above the requirements.

This sucks, but thank you all!

***EDIT: This sounds like my problem, huh? http://www.iwnation.com/Forums/index.php?showtopic=9967

I'd rather just upgrade if that's the case, though I'm still clinging onto the hope that I won't have to.

Somebody needs to go on IWN and post my problem. I don't feel like joining another forum. :winkers::)

Acutally - and this might sound stupid. It might be the way your computer is installed. There can be conflicts between software on your machine. I have had an insident where a freshly installed machine didnt run too well, then i reinstalled with the exact same programs and the machine ran perfectly. Adding UO might have caused such a situation. I am not saying thats the case, but it is worth taking into consideration. There are things happening in windows that we have no control over or even know about. Also do you frequently defrag your machine, scan it for spy ware etc?:cooler:

Joe, are you suggesting a reinstall?

I have no spyware. My system may be slow and old, but it's still clean. :)

I defragged a month or two ago. I'm going to do so again right after this post.

I'm probably going to get some more mem. Even if it doesn't solve my problem it'll still be a help to other applications.

Only do a reinstall if you feel like it. I would go for an upgrade if i were you. Your vid card is a bit out of date and more ram of a good quality is also helpful.
