some good news at least......... the moron did a few thing very wrong. the biggest mistake was trying to extort. this will be his biggest downfall if you persue it. not to mention wire fraud. unless he's one of the idiots from China or Russia you should be able to do something about it. sounds like you have enough information.
I think he's just a script kiddie trying to show off. Apart from the fact he took the forums down for a while, he should be harmless. Let's just hope he gives up the backup and leave it at that, he shouldn't bother us again.
Well, I was hoping to let him be and put my energy into more enjoyable/productive things than going after a pityful hacker. However, the events of today have changed my mind, this guy is a total blindganger that needs to be stopped asap.
who cares about the purpose of the attack, ... you might've known the conversations would lead to something like this. Concentrate on the site and fixing any known vulnerabilities. good luck with everything else.

Sorry I have no info, I only have same admin level stuff as Jv, it looks to me like the whole server is down, even if the domain died, something would come up. do domains go to heaven? have to ask cobs. I think he uses it for BF2
Almost done restoring the forums. As the dust settles, the extent of the damage becomes clear: User account information of users registered after Feb 6, 2011 is lost. These users will need to re-register to continue using the boards. Any private messages sent after Feb 6, 2011 are lost. Threads started after Feb 6, 2011 are lost. However, I was able to recover all individual posts up to the day of attack. These posts have been merged into a single 'Lost + found' thread in each forum, which means that at least all information is still accessible via the search feature. The post chronology is not necessarily correct (but makes sense in many cases). In case the author of the post has registered after Feb 6, 2011, the original author no longer exists as a user and the post is displayed as posted by a 'Guest' user. The attacker has an active threat to release the user account information (which he boasts to have recovered separately from the backup) into the public. I have no intention to respond to his threats, so we'll have to see what happens. In any case it is prudent to consider the password you used to log in to the forums compromised, which means it is best to change your password if you use the same password for other websites/services. I'll need one more day to check that everything is running ok. If all goes well the forums will be re-opened tomorrow.
